Air Fryer Egg Custard

Air Fryer Egg Custard is a simple and comforting dessert that is quick to prepare and easy to make at home. This classic custard is made with milk, eggs, and sugar, then cooked gently in an air fryer to create a smooth and creamy texture. The result is similar to small flans, soft in the middle and lightly set on top.

One of the best things about this recipe is how flexible it is. You can keep it plain or add a few drops of vanilla extract for extra flavour. Liquid caramel can also be added to the bottom of the ramekins for a sweet base. Both options are optional and do not change the main recipe.

The custard is cooked in two stages. First, it is cooked at a lower temperature to gently set the mixture. Then, the temperature is increased to finish cooking. This method helps create a smooth and creamy custard without overcooking.

Using the air fryer makes this dessert very convenient. It cooks quickly, does not need constant checking, and gives consistent results. After cooking, the custard should be cooled and chilled in the fridge so it sets fully before serving.

This dessert is perfect after a meal or as a light afternoon treat. It is simple, lightly sweet, and loved by both kids and adults.

Ingredients

  • 50 cl semi-skimmed milk
  • 3 whole eggs
  • 40 grams sugar
  • A few drops vanilla extract (optional)
  • Liquid caramel for the base (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 160°C using the air fryer mode.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the milk, whole eggs, and sugar until well combined.
  3. Add a few drops of vanilla extract if using, and mix again.
  4. Pour liquid caramel into the bottom of the ramekins if desired.
  5. Divide the custard mixture evenly between the ramekins.
  6. Cook in the air fryer for 6 minutes at 160°C.
  7. Increase the temperature to 180°C and cook for another 6 minutes.
  8. Remove from the air fryer and let the custards cool to room temperature.
  9. Place in the refrigerator until fully chilled.
  10. Serve cold and enjoy.

Tips & Tricks

  • Do not remove the air fryer basket. Place the ramekins directly on top of it.
  • For even cooking, keep the custard mixture at a maximum height of 4 cm in each ramekin.
  • The ramekins used can be around 6.5 cm wide. The height of the mixture is more important than the width.
  • Let the custard chill well before serving for the best texture.
