Air Fryer Toad In The Hole

Air Fryer Toad In The Hole is a classic British comfort dish made in a modern way. Juicy pork sausages are baked inside light, airy Yorkshire pudding batter to create individual portions that are crispy on the outside and soft inside. Cooking this dish in the air fryer makes it quicker, easier, and less messy than using the oven.

This recipe is served with a rich homemade onion gravy that adds deep flavour and ties everything together. The sausages are cooked first so they release some fat and develop colour. This helps flavour the batter and ensures everything cooks evenly.

The Yorkshire pudding batter is simple to prepare. It is made with flour, eggs, and milk and needs resting time. Resting the batter allows the flour to fully absorb the liquid, which helps the pudding rise better and become crisp around the edges.

Cooking the toad in the hole in small cake tins creates neat, individual servings. Heating the oil or vegetable fat before adding the batter is very important. Hot fat helps the batter puff up quickly when it hits the heat.

The onion gravy is cooked slowly so the onions soften and become sweet. Flour thickens the gravy, while beef stock and Worcestershire sauce add depth and richness. The result is a smooth, comforting gravy that pairs perfectly with the sausages and batter.

Serve the mini toad in the hole hot, with plenty of gravy. It goes well with peas, green beans, or mashed potatoes and makes a filling, satisfying meal.

Tips & Tricks

  • Rest the batter for at least 30 minutes for best rise
  • Always preheat the oil or fat before adding the batter
  • Do not open the air fryer while the batter is cooking
  • Slice sausages evenly so they sit well in the batter
  • Taste the gravy and adjust seasoning before serving
